Tuxracer's future ================ Some time ago, the shocking news that tuxracer 1.0 wasn't going to be open source, went around the community. Jasmin F. Patry, the original author, and Sunspire Studios, for whom he works now, supposedly decided to take it closed source. As the copyright holder, it's his right and doesn't conflict with the GPL. But nevertheless, it's sad news. So, how will this affect the tuxracer Debian package? For now, not at all. Tuxracer 0.61 is GPL-ed software and will remain so. For future versions, we will have to see. There is a rumour that there actually will be an open source Tuxracer 1.0, though with delay from the commercial version. Also some people decided to fork off "Open Racer" based on the 0.61 release. There has neither been an open source Tuxracer release > 0.61 nor an Open Racer release. Which will get packaged in the future depends on their freeness and their quality. I hope that Tuxracer stays free (as in freedom) and both projects influence each other positively.
