SubjectTerm

Description

SubjectTerm describes the content of the document that encloses the metadata container in which SubjectTerm's ancestor SubjectSet element occurs. The immediate parent of SubjectTerm is Subject, which groups SubjectTerms according to their frames of reference; SubjectSets contain one or more SubjectTerms. SubjectTerm contains plain text and has common attributes.

Unlike Keyword, SubjectTerm should be used for describing document content according to a controlled vocabulary, which may be large and public (LCSH, or Library of Congress Subject Headings), or small and local (your company's set of subject areas for technical reports). The Scheme attribute of SubjectSet names the controlled vocabulary.
