Quick start

Chapter 2. Quick start

After reading this you will be able to find any file or directory by its name in your entire collection of CDs. When you have a few scanned CDs, consider reading Chapter 3 (smart configuration).

GTKtalog is composed of two main screen parts which lets you browse an opened catalog. The left frame shows the disks. Each one can be browsed in order to select a subdirectory. The right frame shows the files and directories of the selected directory in the left frame.

Scanning

To add a CD to a catalog :

While scanning your CD, GTKtalog shows in a window the progress of the scan. When the scan is finished, the window disappears and the cdrom is ejected.

If you get the message box Could not mount the device. Is the CD player empty ?, please read Chapter 15 to solve this problem. It is a quite common error for a first start and it should not prevent you from using GTKtalog.

Consider clicking on the Save button after scanning a few CDs. This will avoid you rescanning them in the case your computer crashes, your processor stops ... Choose a location on the disk and click on OK. A progress bar in the lower right corner of GTKtalog shows the progress of the saving process.

You can exit anytime from GTKtalog clicking on the Exit button.

If you have modified your catalog but not saved it yet, a box will ask you what to do. Answer:

  • Yes to exit GTKtalog without saving your modifications (since your last save).

  • No to stay in GTKtalog. Then, save your modifications with the Save button.
